Save Free Parking in Tewkesbury Town Centre

We the undersigned petition the council to end plans to introduce paid parking in Tewkesbury town centre and adjoining streets as proposed by Gloucestershire County Council. Tewkesbury retailers may not be able to withstand these proposed charges and local residents must not be asked to pay to park in their own streets.

Retailers are vulnerable to any reductions in footfall and trade. Costs are rising for local shopkeepers and if the council implements paid parking, local business may be put at risk. Tewkesbury town centre is a popular shopping destination for local people, but if additional parking charges are introduced local people will be encouraged to use online shopping services instead.
Tewkesbury is rightfully proud of its independent traders and retailers and they are part of the lifeblood of the Tewkesbury economy, this is put at risk by the introduction of paid parking. A better plan is required which takes into account the cost of parking in existing town centre car parks, maintains current free parking zones and plans for the future of car travel, by implementing electric car charging points. Gloucestershire County Council must work together with Tewkesbury Borough Council to produce a detailed plan for consultation.
Residents should not be asked to pay to park in their own streets and the wider population should not be required to pay to park in their town centre, especially if only staying in town for a short period of time. This is a tax on our ‘market town’ way of life.
